Inserted was chive potato crisp ~Fish course was trout, lobster poached in butter and octopus. We both loved it) ~Hen Egg filled with custard and beef reduction. Think about a small delicate ravioli filled with cheese covered in truffles-the upcharge for this single ravioli is $125.00 if that puts the value of the truffles into perspective) ~Charcoal grilled Japanese Wagyu beef with a piece of snow crab (truly exceptional, never tasted beef like this before.
They serve the foie gras cold and I love it seared and warm) ~Carnaroli Risotto Biologico with shaved black winter truffles from Provence (my favorite dish of all. (Absolutely delicious) ~Oysters & Pearls with sabayon of tapioca and white sturgeon caviar (Michael loved it but I didn’t enjoy the pudding texture) ~Duck Foie Gras (sorry for the bite in the picture. (Tasted like locks and cream cheese) ~Artichoke soup with custard and black winter truffles. ~Started with a tiny ice cream cone filled with cream and raw Salmon. The service is almost better than the food, they are all charming and excellent. Everyone ate the same food and everyone is treated like kings and queens.
Please don't get me wrong, it was a lovely experience but for the price, I am not sure the black card experience really offered us a more elevated night out. For the price, I could have had the regular menu and a $500.00 bottle of wine of my choice and it would have still come in $1500 less. And while trying glass after glass of different wines, I longed for a single bottle of great cabernet. Some of the dishes, while I respected the effort, quality, beauty and craftsmanship simply didn’t taste good to me. And maybe, just maybe, I am not the foodie I thought I was. I have been more satisfied by other meals in my life, but this was a unique experience in a special place. It is really not a meal per se, but an experience. The question we have been most asked is ‘would we do it again’, my short answer would be not likely. I will post pictures, list some of the menu items (I will not list them all) and a few short words about our impression since walking through each detail of the experience would be too exhausting to read about. All of the plates of food are small, almost delicate portions, but the food is so rich that it is all very filling. It would have been helpful to have read about our next course prior to receiving it. We were never handed the menus of our 18 course tasting menu so we were not prepared for what was about to come out of the kitchen next. They arrived to our table by pouring us two glasses of champagne. All of the rooms are intimate and cozy, nothing flashy but fresh flowers on the table, pressed white linens on the table and hand polished flatware. The restaurant itself looks like a large cottage with a garden across the street. The BMW car service they sent was very prompt and comfortable, and we were warmly greeted by a large amount of staff when we arrived.

After a year of anticipation, we waited in our hotel lobby for the driver to arrive. I had been given the Black Card Experience an 18 course tasting experience with wine pairings for two at the French Laundry. Nestled inside was a matte-finished black metal card, with only an etched clothespin on one side, and a phone number on the other. The tiny royal blue box I received last Valentine’s Day was unassuming. To a simple southern home-cook like me, he was beyond compare and so a journey to his restaurant was something I had added to my bucket-list of hopes. Thomas Keller was a chef that was legendary even among other great culinary giants. The French Laundry had become a restaurant in my mind that had almost become folklore. You also get a "gift" from them which is the French Laundry cook book. It is 18 course dinner (well beyond the 6 course on the menu) and you get wine pairings. They say you get a bottle of champagne when you arrive but basically they pour you two glasses and you can ask for more if you would like more. It comes with a BMW car service which will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the French Laundry. They are very responsive and you can pretty much go anytime you wish. There is a phone number on the back of the card and a person will personally handle your reservation for you. It is $2,500.00 for two people to have dinner. You pre-pay on-line and the card arrives by mail.
